Where can I study Journalism in WA State?

Summer Opportunity at Central - ask your advisor, this group has included a week-long camp like they do for Yearbook for decades! College Opportunities in Journalism have many different titles at ever school, some of which include: Media, Communications, Broadcasting, etc. PLU has a great program but there are others in this region. Ask an Academic Counselor at the college or come see me to clarify. JOBS in this field have even more titles, I know b/c I worked for several different cities doing just this!

Journalism Media Classes

LETTER TO STUDENTS:

Being an Artist today requrires a lot of sacrifice. Unfortunately, once the Digital Age came along, it left Artists behind to continue to compete in the same business model from the 1800s Victorian Age. Writers, Painters, Musicians, Graphic Designers, Programmers & Creators, you do NOT have to be in the 1% to get your Art made! Take some business & entrepreneurship classes to learn more about marketing your art and asking for a living wage!

Being a Content Creator and sharing information is still very much an important career, although AI like GPT-3/GPT-4 & PaLM LLMs are trying to take that away from humans. Many students have ideas they wish to build into podcasts, sharing school successes, and creating their own media following their own personal interests, commenting on things they think are important or life, or checking people or organizations they feel might have wronged them in such as exposing unfairness or injustice. These things continue to be important and revealing and information sharing is as relevant today as when I studied journalism in my own high school, and later as a judge for Features Writing at WJEA, the national contest.

For a long time, people thought the news had changed and how we were getting information. This is true, especially with the emergence of Reality TV and platforms that could so quickly disseminate information and reach followers, such as we see in the rise of social media and influencers. The Free Press, Freedom of Expression and Washington State Laws protect students and their views. You ALWAYS have a right to share your view even if it only represents a small minority, if you want help in preparing something, visit one of your teachers for help. I want to encourage this among you, your opinion matters and I would hope you would always be an Upstander in circles of different opinion, but also recognize that even opposing viewpoints are valid and worthy of hearing out as you discover your own beliefs and why they matter to you. In things you don't understand, please talk with your peers, a trusted adult, and certainly your families to help you understand the values that are important in your life and what you stand for.  --hansen
